The Ethics of Transparency: Acknowledging the Limitations of Our AI Research Methodology
At AI Impact, we believe that the value of research lies not only in the data collected but in the honesty with which it is presented. Following our recent deep dive into how we ensured the validity and reliability of our survey instruments, it is equally important to discuss the boundaries of our study.
No research is exhaustive, and acknowledging limitations is a fundamental step toward scientific integrity. Here, we outline the key factors—from sampling strategies to geographical context—that shaped the interpretation and generalizability of our latest findings.
1. The Sampling Paradox: Quality vs. Generalizability
To ensure we gathered data from companies with established processes, we utilized purposive sampling. Our focus was strictly on enterprises with more than ten employees and a minimum of five years of operational history.
While this approach guaranteed a high degree of experiential relevance and data quality, it created a specific „filter.“ Our findings primarily reflect the reality of established SMEs and larger corporations. Consequently, the results may not fully capture the dynamics of microenterprises and start-ups, which often operate with different innovation cycles and AI adoption patterns than their more established counterparts.
2. The Human Factor: Navigating Subjective Perceptions
Our research relied on self-reported data from managers and executives. This introduces the element of subjective perception. When analyzing our results, we must account for:

Social Desirability Bias: The natural tendency for leaders to present their organizations in a favorable light, potentially overstating AI integration for reputational gain.

The „Terminological Gap“: Some respondents might overstate AI use due to a broad or imprecise understanding of what „Artificial Intelligence“ actually entails.

Implicit AI Usage: Conversely, many companies utilize AI-enabled tools (within ERP, CRM, or marketing platforms) without realizing they are AI-based. This „invisible“ technology may lead to an underreporting of actual AI activity.
3. Instrument Constraints: The Depth-Breadth Trade-off
Designing a comprehensive questionnaire is a balancing act. In our effort to be thorough, the survey reached a length that may have induced respondent fatigue. We acknowledge that towards the end of the survey, the precision of answers can naturally decline.
Furthermore, while our use of Likert scales allowed for robust statistical quantification, these scales have inherent limits. They are excellent for measuring what is happening, but they can struggle to capture the why—the subtle nuances of motivation, specific barriers, and the rich contextual experiences that a qualitative interview might reveal.
4. The Geography of Innovation: A Slovak Perspective
Finally, it is crucial to interpret these results within the specific national context of the Slovak Republic. Slovakia currently operates within a unique digital ecosystem characterized by:

Lower technological investment capacity compared to Western European leaders.

A specific industrial structure and regulatory framework.

A distinct cultural approach to digital transformation.
Because of these factors, our findings serve as a vital benchmark for the CEE region but cannot be directly extrapolated to economies with higher digital maturity, such as those in Scandinavia or Western Europe.

Recognizing these limitations does not diminish the value of the research; rather, it provides the necessary framework for an accurate interpretation. By understanding these boundaries, we can better apply these insights to help Slovak companies navigate their unique path toward AI integration.
